Canberra: A Whole Level Dedicated to Wellness

August 14, 2026
Wellness at home does not need to feel clinical, complicated or disconnected from everyday life.
For our Canberra project, we have just completed the design and documentation of an entire lower level dedicated to movement, recovery and quiet time. It is a space created for the whole family, with enough flexibility to support very different routines throughout the day.
There is a fully equipped gym for strength and cardio training, a dedicated yoga studio, red light therapy, recovery boots, a steam shower and bathroom, along with a small kitchenette and comfortable places to sit, pause and reset.

The planning allows each area to operate independently while still feeling part of a cohesive environment. Active spaces transition into quieter zones, with places to stretch, recover, make a drink or sit for a moment after training.
The design language is deliberately soft.
Curved ceilings, rounded columns and gently shaped joinery remove the hard, commercial feeling often associated with home gyms. Textured walls, warm timber, cork flooring and muted natural tones bring a sense of warmth without making the space feel decorative or overworked.

Lighting was central to the design.
As a basement level, the space does not rely on natural light. Instead, illumination is reflected across curved ceilings, concealed beneath shelving and integrated into architectural details. There are no harsh pools of light or rows of visible downlights. The lighting is indirect, layered and calm, helping define each zone while allowing the entire level to feel connected.

A large indoor green wall introduces life and depth, becoming a visual anchor within the lounge and recovery area. Nearby, a sculptural illuminated wall feature and textured glass water elements create subtle movement and reflection.
Even the practical storage has been treated as part of the architecture. Open shelving accommodates weights, yoga equipment, towels and recovery accessories, while concealed storage keeps the larger space visually quiet.

This is not simply a room filled with exercise equipment.
It is a complete environment designed around how the family wants to feel: energised when they arrive, supported while they train and calmer when they leave.
